Oligomer Properties

Oligomers are the bulk component of a UV/EB curable formulation and therefore determine the main properties. Urethane (meth)acrylates provides the best balance between adhesion, hardness, flexibility, weatherability, and abrasion and chemical resistance. Many of these properties are due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding ability of urethane groups.


Urethane (meth)acrylates are suitable for high-grade interior and exterior applications. The main applications are in coatings for metals and plastics as well as coatings for high-quality furniture and flooring. They are also often used in overprint varnishes (OPVs) and offset and screen inks.

Abrasion Resistance

Abrasion resistance is one of the most sought after properties for coating and ink applications. Increasing abrasion resistance of the coating without sacrificing other properties, such as adhesion, has been a continuous challenge for formulators.


All Dymax oligomers are tested for adhesion to variety of substrates utilizing standard formulations. Product data sheets report substrate recommendation for the formulations utilizing Bomar® oligomers.


Various Bomar® oligomers can be used to impart flexibility to coatings, inks, and pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA). These oligomers can be used as the main oligomer or as a co-oligomer. Bomar oligomers are used in applications ranging from thermoformable coatings to highly stretchable inks.


UV-coatings are well known for providing high-gloss surfaces due to their high solids content. Formulations utilizing some of Bomar® oligomers provide extremely reflective surfaces. These oligomers can be utilized in formulating highly glossy OPVs, inks, and coatings.
